Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, at the age of a young girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. After only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting career. It was not without challenges. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to find jobs in the stage. The following job she got was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and moved back to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
